The Nava Kailayam are 9 ancient Shiva temples on the banks of the Thamirabarani River, established by Sage Romaharshana a disciple of Sage Agasthya. The temples are grouped into 3 circuits: Upper Kailayam (Papanasam, Cheranmahadevi, Kodaganallur), Middle Kailayam (Kunnathur, Murappanadu, Srivaikuntam), and Lower Kailayam (Thenthiruperai, Rajapathy, Saendha Poomangalam).
